Being seen clearly at seven in the evening

My workday has a second act. The first happens while the girls are at school and kindergarten. The second begins around seven in the evening, when offices on the other side of the world are having their morning coffee and I appear on their screens from a desk in a quiet house in the hills.

For two years I appeared as a smudge. Laptop cameras do their best, but their best, in warm lamplight, is a woman-shaped shadow. I let it go on far too long for someone whose work involves telling other people how their products should look.

The Egg on the Monitor

The camera I finally bought is the EMEET Piko, a 4K webcam about the size of an egg. It has two lenses, which sounds like marketing until you notice the autofocus actually keeping you sharp when you lean back or hold something up. It was plug and play on my Mac, which I did not take for granted. One reviewer used it across a Mac Studio and a MacBook Pro and reported the same: plug in and you are ready.

The difference in low light is the reason I am writing about it. Evening calls now look like evening, softly lit, instead of looking like a hostage video. A streamer in the reviews was surprised by how good such a tiny camera looked after small adjustments in the companion app. I made almost none. There are three microphones inside too, though I still use my headset out of habit.

Two honest notes. It does not come with a privacy cover, which more than one buyer found stingy in a camera this good, so plan for a little sticker shutter. And while most reviews are happy, one streamer reported theirs failing within weeks, so keep the box until you trust it.

Who Actually Needs This

Not everyone. If your calls happen at noon by a window, your laptop camera is probably fine. This is for people whose important conversations happen at the wrong end of the day. Which, if you live between time zones like I do, is most of them.

Last week a colleague interrupted a call to ask if I had repainted my office. I had not. She could simply see the wall for the first time.
