Washing for the smallest skin in the house

Jenny is three, and her skin keeps its own weather. Some weeks it is fine. Other weeks a red patch appears inside her elbow and she scratches at it in her sleep, and I lie there listening and running through everything she has touched, eaten, or worn.

The paediatrician's advice was unglamorous: simplify the laundry. So began my long season of reading detergent labels, which I do not recommend as a hobby.

Where We Landed

We landed on all Sensitive laundry detergent, the Fresh Spring Breeze one. It is hypoallergenic, made for sensitive skin, and the bottle is concentrated, so the cap you actually pour is small. One bottle claims 110 loads and I believe it. Ours has lasted longer than I expected, and in this house the washing machine runs like a small business.

The scent is the part I want to describe properly, because "fresh and light" on a label can mean anything. It is quiet. Clothes come out smelling clean rather than perfumed, and the smell mostly fades by the time things are folded. A grandmother in the reviews uses it for a granddaughter with bad eczema. Someone else wrote that their itchy skin calmed down after switching. Those are the reviews I trust, the ones written by people who were tired of the problem.

What worked for us: I wash all four of ours in it, not just Jenny's things. Sensitive washing only helps if the towel she dries her face on got the same treatment.

The Honest Part

If you love laundry that announces itself, this will disappoint you. The scent is faint by design. People who want their wardrobe to smell like a boutique hotel should look elsewhere and let the rest of us sleep. Also, the itch inside a small elbow has more than one cause, and no bottle fixes everything. This removed one suspect from my list. That was worth it.

Jenny's weather has been calmer this month. I am not claiming credit on behalf of a detergent. But her sleeves are down, her sleep is quiet, and the machine hums on.
