Two beds outside my mother's kitchen

My mother gardens the way other people breathe. She does not call it gardening. She calls it going outside. Her vegetable patch has fed various configurations of our family for thirty years, and her knees have finally begun to submit their resignation.

So this spring I ordered her two galvanized raised garden beds, the 4x2 foot metal kind, a pale green that she pretended not to care about and then mentioned three times.

The Assembly Afternoon

They arrive flat and become beds through an hour of bolts and mild family commentary. The panels are galvanized steel with rounded edges, no sharp corners waiting for a shin. The one genuinely fiddly part is the rubber trim that caps the top edge. It fights back. A reviewer discovered you can open the gap with a butter knife and pinch it closed as you go, and I pass this on as the single most useful sentence I read all month.

Once filled with soil they are steady. People who have owned flimsier beds write about panels bowing outward under the weight of wet earth; these apparently hold their shape through winters. Her tip, not mine: fill the bottom third with rough garden waste, sticks and old stalks, before the good soil goes in. Cheaper, lighter, and the worms do the rest.

What Grows at Waist Height

The point of a raised bed is not the bed. It is that a woman who was starting to ration her kneeling now weeds standing up, with her coffee in one hand. One buyer planted cucumbers in one and strawberries in the other and I am sorry to report my mother did exactly the same thing, unprompted, an ocean away from them.

The girls visit the beds like they are checking on relatives. Slow mornings, a watering can, someone small announcing that a strawberry is still not ready. It is not my garden and it was never going to be. I just paid for the steel.
