Checking on the garden from another country

There is a particular loneliness to a hotel room at eleven at night when your house is having its morning without you. The girls are at breakfast. Someone has fed the fish, or has not. And I am holding a phone in a country where it is still yesterday's weather, wanting one look at home.

Before my last long trip, we mounted a Tapo C104 camera under the eave, facing the yard and the gate. It is a small thing, rated for rain and dust, and it cost less than the taxi from the airport.

What It Does Well

The picture is proper 1080p across a wide view, and the night vision surprised me: you can have plain black-and-white infrared, or a full-colour mode where small spotlights wake when motion is detected. It tells the difference between a person and general movement, and you can draw zones so the camera minds the gate but ignores the road beyond it.

The part I appreciated most as someone who reads terms and conditions for a living: recordings can go to a microSD card in the camera itself. No subscription required, nothing held hostage in a cloud plan. Several long-time Tapo owners in the reviews run four or five of these on memory cards alone.

Honest notes. Some buyers get false alerts, a cat promoted to "person" at two in the morning, so expect to spend an evening tuning sensitivity and zones. And if your home wifi drops while you are away, the camera cannot reconnect itself, which one frustrated traveller learned the hard way. It watches the house; it does not replace a neighbour with a key.

The Feeling, Which Is the Real Product

You are not really buying a camera. You are buying the ten seconds where the app opens and the yard is just sitting there, sunlit and boring, the washing on the line, a bicycle down on its side where a seven-year-old left it. Boring is the whole prize.

My husband finds it funny that I check it even when I am home. I maintain that the camera and I are simply colleagues now, keeping an eye on the same small kingdom.
