What switches on when something walks past
Evening, first scene. The path from the gate to the door, which by day is a perfectly reasonable path, and by night becomes twelve metres of guesswork. We are far enough up the hill that streetlights are a thing that happens to other people. Guests used to walk it with their phone torches, arriving at the door lit from below like storytellers.
Evening, second scene, two weeks later. The same path, but now a light on the gatepost notices you at the gate and switches on ahead of your feet, and a second one takes over at the corner. The dog next door triggered them the first night and was so offended she has not come back. Everyone else approves.
The Lights Themselves
They are solar motion sensor flood lights, sold as a pair. Each one carries 326 LEDs behind a wide 300-degree face, so the light arrives as a broad wash rather than a spotlight. They drink sunshine all day through a panel on top, need no wiring at all, and offer three modes. Ours sit on the middle setting: a faint glow always, full brightness when something moves. They are rated against rain and dust, and the wet season has so far failed to impress them.
The light itself is cool white, 7000K, which is honest security lighting rather than café ambience. It says visibility, not romance.
Two fair warnings from the reviews and one from me. A few buyers found the mounting brackets crude, and one gave up on them entirely, so expect to bring your own screws and patience. Another had a unit that flickered in steady mode. And these are plastic lights at a plastic price; on an exposed wall in brutal weather, one seasoned buyer doubted they would see many seasons. On our sheltered posts, they are earning their keep so far.
The Sum of It
The path is no longer guesswork. Guests arrive lit like guests. And there is a particular pleasure, coming home late from the airport, in being recognised at your own gate by something that then politely lights your way to the door.
