A light the size of a plum

Jenny turned three and immediately developed policies. Doors must be open exactly this much. The hallway must not be dark. The dark, she explained to me with great patience, is where the buffalo waits. I have never established which buffalo. Some questions are not mine to ask.
The hallway negotiation ended with a pair of LOHAS plug-in night lights. Small black cylinders, a warm 3000K glow, a dial on the side for brightness, and a sensor that turns them off at dawn without being asked.
They are the size of a plum and they solved a problem the size of a buffalo.
Why These Little Ones
The dimmer is the whole trick. Turned low, the glow is enough for a three-year-old to verify the hallway is buffalo-free, but not enough to leak under our door and bother the adults who prefer proper darkness. A parent in the reviews described the same treaty: comfort for the child, black night for themselves, everyone asleep. The dusk-to-dawn sensor means nobody remembers to switch anything, which in this house is the only kind of system that survives.
They are also, unexpectedly, handsome. The little black frame looks deliberate on the wall rather than medical. Buyers keep mentioning ordering more sets after guests asked about them, and I understand, because one of ours has already migrated to the bathroom and I have caught myself planning a third for the top of the stairs.
One note before you buy: choose the 3000K soft white unless you genuinely want daylight at midnight. One reviewer found even the soft version a touch cooler than expected at full brightness. Turn the dial down; the light warms as it dims.
The Report at Breakfast
The morning after we plugged them in, Jenny delivered her findings over breakfast: the buffalo had not come. She said it the way an auditor signs off a clean year. The lights have been on duty every night since, costing pennies, saying nothing.
Somewhere in the wall, a sensor watches for morning. In her room, she sleeps with both arms flung out, unguarded.
