I live in coffee country. The hills around us grow it, the town smells of it on roasting days, and my family holds opinions about beans the way other families hold opinions about football. So I want it understood that what I am about to confess is confessed under duress of honesty.

My second cup of the day is instant. And it has mushrooms in it.

How It Came to This

The first cup is sacred and local and nobody touches it. The problem was always the 2pm cup, the one that carried me into evening calls and then sat up with me at midnight, uninvited. I needed something that felt like coffee without behaving like it.

Catfit mushroom coffee is instant coffee blended with ten mushroom and adaptogen extracts, lion's mane and chaga among them, with a fraction of the usual caffeine. You stir a spoonful into hot water and it tastes, genuinely, like a decent instant coffee with something earthy underneath. One reviewer who has tried the whole category called this one earthy and aromatic with a rich texture; another admitted they never drink instant and were surprised into liking it.

What I notice is what I do not notice. No 3pm jitter. No midnight audit of the day's decisions. The afternoon simply proceeds.

Fair warning from the honest end of the reviews: one buyer found it had barely any taste at all. Mushroom coffee is a mild drink by design, and if you measure coffee by its punch, this will read as a shrug. Start with a heaped spoon and less water.

My compromise, borrowed from a reviewer and now permanent: half a spoon of this stirred into a weak cup of the real thing. The hills get their tribute, the mushrooms do their work, and everyone sleeps.

The Diplomatic Position

My husband has declined to acknowledge the jar. My mother picked it up once, read the word mushroom, and put it down with the face she uses for foreign inventions. I have stopped campaigning. The jar and I understand each other, every afternoon at two.

My father measures things. Rainfall, the growth of trees, the price of fertiliser across three decades. When his doctor told him to keep an eye on his blood pressure, he wrote the readings in a notebook with a pencil kept specifically for the purpose. The notebook system had one flaw: I could not read it from another country.

So on my last trip home from the airport I brought a iHealth Track blood pressure monitor, and my father and I entered the modern age together, one cuff at a time.

Why This One

Three reasons, chosen with my parents specifically in mind. The display is large and bright, with numbers you can read across the kitchen. The cuff fits standard to large arms without wrestling. And it keeps its own memory while also sending readings over Bluetooth to a phone app, where the history draws itself into trends. Doctors apparently recommend this exact machine to patients; more than one reviewer arrived on its page by prescription, so to speak.

The part that mattered to me is the app. My father presses one button in the morning. Later, over coffee in another hemisphere, I can see the reading, the average, the gentle slope of the last month. He does not know I check daily. He suspects, and reads the numbers out loud at dinner anyway, for the household record.

An honest note on accuracy: one careful buyer took theirs to a clinic and found it read slightly differently from the nurse's cuff. Their doctor's advice was sensible: do the same comparison once, learn your machine's offset, and be consistent. Home monitors are for trends, not diagnoses.

What It Actually Bought

Not health, exactly. Machines do not grant that. What it bought is a shared set of facts between a stubborn man, his doctor, and a daughter who is often far away. The pencil has been reassigned to the rainfall book, which was apparently in arrears.

Bà ngoại refuses her turn with the cuff, on the grounds that her blood pressure is her own business. We are working on her.

Macca is seven, which is the age where a person begins to curate. Stones with qualities. Feathers of significance. A drawer in her room holds the collection, and woe to anyone who tidies it. So when I saw a LEGO set whose entire premise is a museum run by an owl, curated by a child, I did not stand a chance and neither did my card.

The set is Blathers's Museum Collection from the LEGO Animal Crossing line, aimed at exactly her age and up.

What Comes in the Box

Blathers the owl and Lily the frog in minifigure form, a museum with a fossil wing and an aquarium, a butterfly to catch, a little Triceratops tailbone to excavate with a spade, and a corner café for when curating gets tiring, which it does. The walls are on hinges, so the whole museum opens and rearranges. Macca rebuilt the layout three times in the first week, each version announced as final.

The build itself is gentle. She did most of it herself over two afternoons, with me on part-sorting duty, demoted from engineer. Adult fans of the game buy this set for themselves and review it glowingly; one grandfather sat straight down on the floor to build it with the birthday boy, which tells you the pull works on every generation.

If your child plays the actual game, watch their face when they recognise the Roost café corner. That recognition, a world crossing from screen to fingers, is most of what you are buying.

Small Honesty

This is not one of the giant sets. It is a scene, not a city, and a fast builder could finish it in an evening. The value lives in the playing afterwards: ours has become the venue for exhibitions of real treasures, with a stone of quality currently on loan from the drawer, displayed beside the plastic fossil as an equal.

Some toys get built and shelved. This one got a job.

Evening, first scene. The path from the gate to the door, which by day is a perfectly reasonable path, and by night becomes twelve metres of guesswork. We are far enough up the hill that streetlights are a thing that happens to other people. Guests used to walk it with their phone torches, arriving at the door lit from below like storytellers.

Evening, second scene, two weeks later. The same path, but now a light on the gatepost notices you at the gate and switches on ahead of your feet, and a second one takes over at the corner. The dog next door triggered them the first night and was so offended she has not come back. Everyone else approves.

The Lights Themselves

They are solar motion sensor flood lights, sold as a pair. Each one carries 326 LEDs behind a wide 300-degree face, so the light arrives as a broad wash rather than a spotlight. They drink sunshine all day through a panel on top, need no wiring at all, and offer three modes. Ours sit on the middle setting: a faint glow always, full brightness when something moves. They are rated against rain and dust, and the wet season has so far failed to impress them.

The light itself is cool white, 7000K, which is honest security lighting rather than café ambience. It says visibility, not romance.

Two fair warnings from the reviews and one from me. A few buyers found the mounting brackets crude, and one gave up on them entirely, so expect to bring your own screws and patience. Another had a unit that flickered in steady mode. And these are plastic lights at a plastic price; on an exposed wall in brutal weather, one seasoned buyer doubted they would see many seasons. On our sheltered posts, they are earning their keep so far.

The Sum of It

The path is no longer guesswork. Guests arrive lit like guests. And there is a particular pleasure, coming home late from the airport, in being recognised at your own gate by something that then politely lights your way to the door.

Jet lag is not tiredness. Tiredness is fixable by sleep. Jet lag is your body politely insisting it is lunchtime while the whole dark house disagrees. In my first nights home from a trip, I need every possible advantage, and for years my pillow was not one of them. It ran warm, it went flat, and at 3am it became my enemy.

So I tried the CGK adjustable cooling pillow, which comes with an instruction most pillows do not: take some of it out.

A Pillow You Edit

It arrives vacuum-packed and expands into something absurdly full, like bread proving past its tin. This is deliberate. Inside the zip is shredded memory foam, and you remove handfuls until the loft suits your sleeping style. I took out three generous handfuls and stored them in a freezer bag, and only then did it become my pillow rather than a pillow.

One side has cool-touch fabric; the other side is plain and soft for cold-season nights. The cover is OEKO-TEX certified and zips off for the wash, which matters in a bed occasionally invaded at dawn by a three-year-old carrying breakfast crumbs of unknown origin.

Read this part before buying. It has a chemical smell out of the packet; air it a few days, as several buyers advise, and do not sleep on it night one. Some people found it stayed warm regardless, so hot sleepers hoping for magic should be sceptical of any pillow, this one included. And when you remove fill, the remaining foam can drift into a lump until you learn to give it a shake in the morning. This is a pillow that expects participation.

After the Editing

Once tuned, it holds its shape night after night, which was the thing I actually wanted. The cool side is real, especially in the first hour, which is precisely when jet lag does its best sabotage. One reviewer said it took a couple of days to get used to and then earned the time. That was my arc too.

The freezer bag of spare foam lives in the wardrobe now, a small monument to the idea that comfort sometimes needs to be negotiated rather than purchased.

Every frequent flyer carries a private museum of small defeats. Mine includes a proposal finished at 4% battery in a departure lounge with every socket taken, and a phone that died in a taxi queue in the rain, holding my hotel address hostage. You do not forget these. You pack differently afterwards.

What I pack now is a TALIX 140W power bank, a 20,000mAh brick with a little display that tells you, in honest percentages, how much rescue remains.

Why This Brick

Two numbers convinced me. The first is 140 watts out, which is proper laptop power, enough to take a big MacBook to half charge in about half an hour. Most power banks trickle politely at phone speeds; this one actually works for a living. The second is 73 watt-hours, which sits under the 100Wh airline limit, so it flies in your carry-on without conversation at security. A reviewer confirmed it is even certified for flights in markets with stricter battery rules, which tells you someone at this company reads regulations for fun. My kind of company.

It also recharges itself in about seventy-five minutes from a decent wall charger, verified by an enthusiast reviewer with a wattage meter and, evidently, my exact personality. Charge it in the hotel while you shower, and it is full before you are.

Learned the useful way: it needs a proper 100W wall charger and a cable rated for it to refill at full speed. Through an old phone charger, the seventy-five minutes becomes an evening.

The Fair Caveats

It is a brick, in weight as well as shape. Fine in a carry-on, noticeable in a handbag. And one reviewer felt the price was ahead of the specs compared to bigger brands. Perhaps. But the famous brands were not on the shelf the week I needed one, and this has since crossed the world with me several times without a stumble.

The proposal deadlines have not stopped. The lounges still have four sockets for two hundred people. I just stopped being part of that economy.

Towels are honest. Clothes will lie for you, but a towel three days into the rainy season tells the truth about your laundry, and the truth in our bathroom had developed a certain dampness of character.

A friend who takes laundry far more seriously than I do pressed a bottle of Downy Unstopables into my hands with the confidence of a woman sharing contraband. Little scent beads. You tip some into the drum before the clothes, and the smell stays in the fabric for weeks rather than days.

After two months of living with them, some observations, held loosely:

The towels are cured. Whatever damp ghost lived in them has been evicted.

Sheets are where these earn their keep. One reviewer shook out a comforter stored for two months and found it still smelled freshly washed. I tested this claim with a spare duvet cover. Confirmed.

You need far less than the cap suggests. A quiet minority in the reviews shouts this from the hills, one recommending a single teaspoon, and they are right. Start tiny. The beads are strong, and the line between fresh and perfume counter is maybe half a capful wide.

They do nothing for actual cleaning. This is scent, not soap. Stains and detergent remain their own department.

My husband, who has never once commented on laundry in the entire history of our marriage, held up a shirt and asked what was different. No verdict. Just the question. I count it.

If anyone in your house has a sensitive nose or reactive skin, this is not their product. Go gently or skip it; the scent is genuinely persistent, which is both the feature and the warning.

The bottle sits on the shelf above the machine now, half gone. In a house run on small systems, this one costs a capful, or less, and pays out every time someone buries their face in a towel without thinking. Which is the only time towels are ever really judged.

Sunday afternoons here have a sound, and the sound is a lid. A heavy one, settling onto a heavy pot, with something inside that will not be ready for three hours and does not need me in the meantime. I go and live my life. The pot does its work. We reconvene at dinner.

The pot is an Amazon Basics enameled cast iron Dutch oven, the big 7.3 quart one, in green. I bought it after a long, silly deliberation over the famous French kind, the one that costs as much as a flight. I do product margins for a living. I knew exactly what I was paying for with the famous one, and one Sunday I decided not to.

What the Heavy Lid Buys You

Cast iron under enamel, so it holds heat evenly and forgives you for walking away. Oven safe to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. Big enough for a stew that feeds six, or four people twice, which is how stew is meant to work. The lid sits snug; one reviewer who braises seriously pointed out how little evaporation escapes during a long cook, and that snugness is exactly what you are paying famous brands for.

People bake sourdough in it. People make phở stock in it, though the reviews do not say so; that one is mine. After months of Sundays, the enamel inside ours has kept its surface, and nothing has stuck badly enough to be remembered.

Be honest with yourself about the weight. Full, this pot is a two-hands, mind-your-back object. And the enamel wants hand washing, warm water, no metal spoons. It is not fussy, but it is not invincible either.

The Permanent Resident

One reviewer confessed to choosing a Dutch oven deliberately too big for the cupboard so it would have to live on the stove forever. I did not plan this, but it happened anyway. The green pot is on the stove as I write this. It has become part of what the kitchen looks like, the way a kettle is.

Macca calls it the soup house. Things go in, the lid comes down, and soup lives there until evening. I have heard worse descriptions of comfort.

Our house was built by someone who believed in walls. Thick, honest, signal-eating walls. For years the internet lived gloriously in the front room and arrived in the back bedroom as a rumour. I ran a company through those walls. I took investor calls crouched on the landing, laptop balanced on the banister, because that was where the bars lived.

There is something clarifying about hearing yourself say "sorry, you cut out" for the hundredth time in a month. You either move house or fix the network.

The Fix

We fixed it with a TP-Link Deco BE23 mesh system, three white units that look like small vases and cover the whole house, garden included, with one network name. It is Wi-Fi 7, which matters less for the number and more for what it does in practice: the connection follows you from room to room without dropping, and every device simply finds the nearest unit and gets on with it.

Setup was an app and twenty minutes. I say this as someone who expected an afternoon of ceiling-staring: the app walks you through it, and reviewers from skeptics to self-declared geeks report the same painless first hour. One had tried three routers and two extenders to reach a son's bedroom before this finally did it. I felt that in my banister-crouching bones.

The unglamorous tip: put the second unit halfway to the dead zone, not inside it. A mesh node rescued from the worst room has nothing good to pass along.

Honesty Section

Most owners report stable speeds and fewer dead spots. One unhappy buyer had the opposite: network instability after installing, discovered too late to return. Every mesh system has these stories; houses are strange and so are internet providers. Set it up early in your return window and test the far corners properly. Also, everything is managed through the app, which will bother people who like a proper settings page.

These days the back bedroom has the same internet as everywhere else, and the landing is just a landing. Sometimes I pass it and feel a small retroactive indignity on behalf of the woman who used to work there.

Jenny turned three and immediately developed policies. Doors must be open exactly this much. The hallway must not be dark. The dark, she explained to me with great patience, is where the buffalo waits. I have never established which buffalo. Some questions are not mine to ask.

The hallway negotiation ended with a pair of LOHAS plug-in night lights. Small black cylinders, a warm 3000K glow, a dial on the side for brightness, and a sensor that turns them off at dawn without being asked.

They are the size of a plum and they solved a problem the size of a buffalo.

Why These Little Ones

The dimmer is the whole trick. Turned low, the glow is enough for a three-year-old to verify the hallway is buffalo-free, but not enough to leak under our door and bother the adults who prefer proper darkness. A parent in the reviews described the same treaty: comfort for the child, black night for themselves, everyone asleep. The dusk-to-dawn sensor means nobody remembers to switch anything, which in this house is the only kind of system that survives.

They are also, unexpectedly, handsome. The little black frame looks deliberate on the wall rather than medical. Buyers keep mentioning ordering more sets after guests asked about them, and I understand, because one of ours has already migrated to the bathroom and I have caught myself planning a third for the top of the stairs.

One note before you buy: choose the 3000K soft white unless you genuinely want daylight at midnight. One reviewer found even the soft version a touch cooler than expected at full brightness. Turn the dial down; the light warms as it dims.

The Report at Breakfast

The morning after we plugged them in, Jenny delivered her findings over breakfast: the buffalo had not come. She said it the way an auditor signs off a clean year. The lights have been on duty every night since, costing pennies, saying nothing.

Somewhere in the wall, a sensor watches for morning. In her room, she sleeps with both arms flung out, unguarded.
